Louis Dreyfus Company Partners with bound4blue to Install Innovative Wind-Assisted Propulsion System on Juice Vessel

Reducing Fuel Consumption and Emissions

Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC), a leading global merchant and processor of agricultural goods, has chosen bound4blue’s cutting-edge eSAIL technology to install four 26-meter-high eSAILs on its chartered juice vessel in 2024. This collaboration with Wisby Tankers AB is expected to reduce annual fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by at least 10%.

Advancing Maritime Decarbonization

bound4blue, a key player in the development of maritime decarbonization solutions, has developed the eSAIL system, which harnesses wind power to propel vessels. By using wind-assisted propulsion technology, bound4blue’s eSAILs achieve a substantial reduction in fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. The technology, evaluated as the most promising by Lloyd’s Register, leverages a thick aerodynamic profile and intelligent suction mechanisms to enhance propulsive efficiency, offering seven times more lift than an airplane wing.

A Proven Solution for Fuel and Emission Reduction

The implementation of bound4blue’s eSAIL system on LDC’s chartered juice vessel demonstrates the maturity of the technology as a proven solution for fuel and emission reduction. José Miguel Bermúdez, CEO of bound4blue, expressed his pleasure at the partnership, stating, “LDC is at the forefront of adopting proven clean technologies to reduce carbon emissions in its fleet, and we are delighted to support them in their endeavor.”

Shaping a Low-Carbon Economy

LDC’s Global Head of Freight, Sébastien Landerretche, emphasized the company’s commitment to shaping a low-carbon economy and contributing to the global shipping industry’s energy transition journey. The partnership with bound4blue and Wisby Tankers to install advanced sail technology on LDC’s chartered juice carrier aligns with the International Maritime Organization’s target to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from the sector by 2050.

New Foundation to Support Sustainable Coffee Industry

Guido Bernardinelli, CEO of La Marzocco, emphasizes the growing consumer demand for specialty coffee with a focus on origin and production methods. The Hands for Songwa Foundation aims to empower coffee farmers and create a sustainable industry.

Roots of the Initiative

The foundation stems from the Songwa Estates project, which began in 2007 with collaboration from La Marzocco, Hemro, and Probat. Probat will shift focus to other projects in January 2024, while La Marzocco and Hemro will continue their support and invite new partners in the future.

Community Development in Tanzania

Empowering Women in Agriculture

The foundation prioritizes women in sustainable agro-economic development, focusing on environmentally friendly practices, community nurseries, and small coffee plots. The Hisuimbe Project introduces a microcredit system to empower women producers within the association.

Future Initiatives and Support

La Marzocco and Hemro plan to continue supporting the community and explore new initiatives for local economic development. They will advocate for ongoing projects, maintain a close relationship with the Songwa plantation, and provide training opportunities and research projects.
