ITC and International Coffee Organization Partner to Promote Circular Economy and Sustainable Coffee Value Chains

Partnerships for a Sustainable Future

The International Trade Centre (ITC) has signed and strengthened partnerships to promote a circular economy and sustainable coffee value chains at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai. The aim is to ensure that the perspectives of producers and small businesses are included in climate discussions.

Piloting Projects for Replication

ITC and the International Coffee Organization (ICO) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to pilot projects that can be replicated across the ICO’s 75 member countries. These projects will provide training to coffee producers on value addition, circular economy, sustainable production practices, improving productivity, coffee quality, and resilience to climate change. The ultimate goal is to generate decent, living incomes for coffee farmers.

Supporting Coffee Farmers and Producers

In addition, ITC, ICO, and the Center for Circular Economy in Coffee (C4CEC) have signed an MoU to support coffee farmers and producers in generating new value from traditional waste in a sustainable manner. The agreements are subject to final validation by the International Coffee Council (ICC).

Building on a Long-standing Partnership

The partnership between ITC and ICO has been ongoing for many years. Their collaboration has resulted in the release of the popular ITC Coffee Guide and has laid the foundations for an improved and more inclusive coffee sector. With the renewed vigor of cooperation, the organizations aim to formalize and expand their collaboration.

Accelerating the Circular Economy

The collaboration between ITC, ICO, and C4CEC will accelerate the implementation of a circular economy in the coffee sector. The organizations aim to make knowledge available to small businesses, value chain operators, farmer organizations, and consumer-facing companies worldwide. This collaboration builds on existing partnerships established through the ITC Coffee Guide Network initiative and the circular economy working group co-facilitated by ITC, ICO, and the Lavazza Foundation.

Promoting Sustainable Practices

At COP28, the ITC and its partners explored the circular economy in coffee. The session ‘Global green deal: How would it fit the Global South?’ discussed how to transform global food systems in the face of climate change. Tangible action by individual players is crucial, but joining forces with all actors in the coffee industry is essential for a successful circular transition.

Commitment to a Sustainable Future

Hernan Manson, Head of Inclusive Agribusiness, Food Systems and Trade at ITC, stated, “Through our enduring partnership with ITC, we are committed to driving impactful change in the coffee sector. The alliances forged at COP28 mark a significant step towards a sustainable future, ensuring the well-being and prosperity of coffee farmers and advancing circular economy practices.”

By partnering with the International Coffee Organization and the Center for Circular Economy in Coffee, the International Trade Centre is taking concrete steps towards promoting a circular economy and sustainable coffee value chains. These partnerships aim to empower coffee producers and small businesses, generate decent incomes, and contribute to a more sustainable future for the coffee industry.

New Foundation to Support Sustainable Coffee Industry

Guido Bernardinelli, CEO of La Marzocco, emphasizes the growing consumer demand for specialty coffee with a focus on origin and production methods. The Hands for Songwa Foundation aims to empower coffee farmers and create a sustainable industry.

Roots of the Initiative

The foundation stems from the Songwa Estates project, which began in 2007 with collaboration from La Marzocco, Hemro, and Probat. Probat will shift focus to other projects in January 2024, while La Marzocco and Hemro will continue their support and invite new partners in the future.

Community Development in Tanzania

The Songwa Estates Project has improved the quality of life near the Songwa plantation through infrastructure projects funded by La Marzocco, Hemro, and others. This includes wells, school renovations, and support during the pandemic, enhancing education and personal growth for collaborators.

Empowering Women in Agriculture

The foundation prioritizes women in sustainable agro-economic development, focusing on environmentally friendly practices, community nurseries, and small coffee plots. The Hisuimbe Project introduces a microcredit system to empower women producers within the association.

Future Initiatives and Support

La Marzocco and Hemro plan to continue supporting the community and explore new initiatives for local economic development. They will advocate for ongoing projects, maintain a close relationship with the Songwa plantation, and provide training opportunities and research projects.

How to Support
