International Coffee Campaign Raises Awareness for Occupational Safety and Health

The #CoffeePeople Campaign

The International Labour Organization (ILO) recently launched the #CoffeePeople campaign, with the goal of raising awareness about occupational safety and health in the coffee supply chain. The campaign utilized a website, social media, and newsletters to disseminate knowledge, scale up good practices, and mobilize collective action.

Collaboration with Key Partners

The success of the #CoffeePeople campaign was due in large part to collaboration with key partners, including the International Coffee Organization, German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, US Department of Labor, French Ministry of Labour, the European Commission, the International Organization of Employers, and the ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo.

Pledging Concrete Action

Following the awareness-raising efforts of the campaign, stakeholders pledged concrete action for coffee workers. The campaign transcended borders, bringing together people from 50 countries to address occupational safety and health in the coffee industry.

Workshops and Conversations

The campaign kicked off with an engaging workshop in Italy, setting the stage for a year filled with collaborative efforts to enhance occupational safety and health in the coffee supply chain. Workshops were held in various countries, including Vietnam, Brazil, India, and Uganda, bringing together representatives from governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations, and other stakeholders. These sessions fostered insightful conversations on adapting the campaign to local occupational safety and health landscapes.

Social Media Challenge

On International Coffee Day, thousands of people worldwide joined the #CoffeePeople social media challenge, raising awareness and engaging 25 million people globally. The campaign’s webinars and information sessions also saw active participation, with over 600 attendees contributing to the knowledge-sharing and learning objectives of the campaign.

Impressive Reach and Impact

The #CoffeePeople campaign reached over 10,000 stakeholders through newsletters, achieving an impressive 30% open rate, surpassing industry averages. Additionally, over 20 campaign documents were developed, and 100 social media cards were created to raise awareness and encourage stakeholders to take action. The campaign’s Collective Action Kit helped stakeholders identify their pledges in line with campaign objectives, and the three-part data story provided relevant insights on the state of occupational safety and health in the coffee industry.
