Brazilian Coffee Farms Show Negative Emissions in New Study, Boosting Sustainability Efforts

Coffee Farms in Cerrado Mineiro Region Sequester More Carbon Than They Emit

In a recent study conducted by the Institute of Forest and Agricultural Management and Certification (Imaflora), coffee farms in the Cerrado Mineiro region of Brazil were found to sequester more carbon than they emit. The study, which assessed 20 properties associated with the Cerrado Coffee Growers’ Cooperative (Expocacer), used the Carbon On Track service platform and found a negative emissions figure of -0.2 ton of carbon dioxide per hectare per year. This highlights the sustainable work being done by these farms in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

Organic Farming Practices Contribute to Carbon Sequestration

The study also revealed that the use of organic fertilizers and vegetable waste on the analyzed farms played a significant role in mitigating greenhouse gases. By using organic materials such as chicken litter, cattle manure, pruning waste, straw, and grasses instead of chemical nitrogen, farmers were able to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil. These organic inputs also improve soil quality, nutrient cycling, porosity, and water retention in the long term.

Sustainable Agricultural Techniques Reduce Emissions and Add Value

According to Alessandro Rodrigues, Projects and Services Coordinator for Imaflora’s Climate and Emissions area, farms with more sustainable agricultural techniques not only reduce their emissions but also contribute to carbon sequestration. This carbon-negative grain gains added value and shows that sustainability is good for business. Expocacer, the Cerrado Coffee Growers’ Cooperative, believes that the trend towards reducing greenhouse gases should be followed by farms around the world. They encourage other farms to adopt sustainable practices such as using organic fertilizers and compounds instead of chemical ones.

Regenerative Certification Recognizes Expocacer’s Sustainable Practices

Expocacer was recently awarded the Regenerative Certification by Regenagri, making it the first coffee cooperative in the world to receive this recognition. The certification confirms the cooperative’s commitment to sustainable practices, including renewable energy, selective collection, and traceability of stored coffees. Expocacer’s processes, from receiving and processing certified regenerative coffees to distribution, are aligned with the health and preservation of the soil.

Sustainable Practices Improve Soil Quality and Reduce External Inputs

The study also highlights that the use of sustainable practices in coffee farming helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the long term. These practices, such as improving soil quality and reducing the use of external inputs like nitrogen, phosphorus, and glyphosate, have a positive impact on the environment. Expocacer’s cooperative farms, located in the Cerrado biome, have already implemented these practices and have seen above-average coffee yields.
